debian , ubuntu have set of official membership roles can granted regular contributors. roles come rights enable contributors work , participate in project governance (elections , other official decision-making processes). it’s way distributions acknowledge work done: contributors proud of status reached.
membership structure plays important role in development of distribution: defines kind of contributors welcome in project, sets expectations of project towards contributors , defines rights. in end, shapes project’s ability recruit new contributors keep project alive , kicking. article introduces existing statuses in debian , ubuntu, , defines — confusing — jargon associated them.

annual ohio linuxfest genuine grass-roots community event. 1 of fun , worthwhile linux fests, , 1 of welcoming-- brand-new linux users, people curious linux, wizened gurus , in between welcome.
many of big-name linux fests pay lip service diversity, don't invest energy in trying attract diverse audience, or diverse range of speakers. organizers of 2010 ohio linuxfest wanted more women speakers, , bit of effort able attract many more before:
"with little outreach effort, , embracing diversity core value, ohio linuxfest has recruited more women share experience @ olf.
'how'd do? while last year 5 of speakers @ ohio linuxfest women, out of total of 31, year 14 of 38 speakers women. that's third of conference speaking slots! 1 of 2 keynoters woman. there 107 talk proposals 27 general speaking slots. "
