Photoshop CS3 doesn't respond when opening a file (jpg or .psd)

i have been using cs3 since first came out no trouble @ all. running os 10.4.11. couple  days ago, when open file, such jpg, color wheel just  spins , spins. when check finder, says photoshop not  responding, force quit, restart computer, etc.

 

after reading forums, here have done far, no luck:

 

made sure have current version of photoshop cs3.

relaunched program - resetting preferences.

set default printer "pdf."

moved , renamed plug-ins folder.

 

i  have uninstalled program , reinstalled it. fixed  things day or so, started. have not  made changes computer. have not downloaded new. the  thing can figure, first time happened, was  opening jpg of image off cd photographer. had already  opened several images cd no problem. thought maybe  particular image corrupt, once reinstalled, able  open image no problem.

 

thank in advance may able offer me!

also, out of curiosity, wanted see if open new file created in photoshop (since launches fine , open new document). tried , got spinning color wheel, file did save preview, when tried open file --- spinning wheel again.

 

then, thought see if place jpg in new file. did fine, when tried save .psd file, got spinning color wheel again.
