Trying to figure out joining of ovals...

i tried re-creating graphic sent me.  wanted in illustrator because of crunch time, went ahead , did in photoshop.  now, want figure out how in illustrator.

here ths screenshot of i've done in ai far:

 

 

the screenshot of i've done @ point in illustrator seems working out.  on black circles layer, drew oval, stretched fit photo, duplicated , made smaller make black pipes.  put thin center circle between them me line arrowheads.  other circles , lines pretty easy figure out.  you'll notice i'm doing in ai off photo.  i'm making slight adjustments go along.

 

so i'm asking on is, i'd love able go black circles layer , kind of tool (pen?) click on outer oval, middle, inner, draw backs of arrows.  then, somehow select did , - presto! - have joined curved arrow can fill black.

 

any ideas on how this?  use ai , psd cs4.

if understand in right way, can:

 

1) create outer ellipse;

2) object>path>offset path twice negative value create centre , inner ellipses, , move centre elleipse top;

3) select outer , inner ellipses, object>compound path>make, , use black fill;

 

now have black filled oval;

 

4) create arrowhead triangle pointing left, middle left reference point chosen create larger copy behind bases (rearmost sides) coincide, , pathfinder>divide;

 

now have arrow , v shape in front of cut opening in oval;

 

5) place , rotate each arrowhead set 4) want them on 3) , ungroup them, select v shape , object>path>divide objects below , remove unwanted parts;

 

now have pieces of oval , arrowheads;

 

6) select each arrowhead , oval part , pathfinder>add shape area (expand if needed create simple paths;

 

now have oval parts arrows;

 

7) use type on path on centre oval parts type, , use character>baseline shift fit centre.

 

i not sure photo; far can see, can made illy.
