Simple CRUD operations with SQL Server/ColdFusion

i'm learning flashbuilder (also delphi , vs development) , have followed many tutorials (both videos , written) can. eyes bleary.

 

the problem running (which basic) is: try emulate crud operations shown in "flex in hour" tutorial, database in place of employees. however, database consists of numbers text data. when create details add form string fields blank, fine, numeric fields contain "nan" (not number, know). however, nice, well-behaved, simple crud app on single table shouldn't show "nan", shouldn't show 0, new numeric fields, should blank. life of me can't dig out way "intercept" data, before it's put in form, , display blanks instead of nan. can work if neatly type on nan numbers, @ loss how go further.

 

i've looked @ tutorials can , have failed find single 1 walks me through crud on table numeric fields. i've heard talk of "getters" , "setters" way intercept data, can't find either reasonably clear explanation in docs or straightforward, relevant, tutorial.

 

just, please, point me in direction of information how set nice add form blanks new record , promise i'll read, study , can working.
