new ubuntu, have been using debian on couple of machines around 4 years.
today bought lenovo g555 amd athlon ii processor, of course windows 7 installed.
thought try ubuntu instead of debian few reasons...easier time installing f77 compiler being 1 springs mind...
burned 32bit ubuntu iso disc on home machine, inserted new machine, powered , told machine check cd before hdd further instruction. well, crisp fonts dispalyed on screen , nothing out of oridinary. ubuntu started running though screen became extremely hard read. font smeared, , felt image smeared , possibly updating @ wrong rate. hazy diagonal blue lines present in bg.
tried few simple things, changing screen resolutions (tried each of 3 16:9 options listed under system>preferences>monitors... no joy) tried changing refresh rate under same tab, turns out 60hz option on drop down menu.
did bit of web reserach , found posts relating xorg.conf file... in /etc/ apparently doesn't exist default in version of ubuntu (10.04).
*** n.b. @ point in writting post, went on laptop re-run through steps had taken, document them post... not knwo @ point screen cleared, @ point did... of course @ point had been working on hour.. modifying xorg.conf.
know problem fixable, ... know upgraded , updated during effing around, can't sure fixed situation...
nice tidy looking display, tried rebooting , treated fuzzy looking display...
so, knowing somehow fixed tried rerunning commands had tried previously... no joy
tried dumping of text had put in xorf.conf therein again , rebooted,,, since wasnt right combo of text wound no display @ all... tried reinstalling ... , repeating , commands think of tried... no luck.
bottom line...
pretty sure /etc/x11/xorg.conf problem (initally there wasn't one, , created one...) bad didn't record in 1 when had working...
p-lease help.
record, graphics card is:
ati mobility raden hd 4200
-klive
1 more thing, screen looks fine in windows configured @ 60hz refresh rate... , looks fine in bootloader menus... in ubuntu mess...
ummm wow...
thats embarassing...
turns out if go system > administration > hardware drivers,
, select , install driver, well, thats it, problem solved. guessing sort out wireless same way.
ok, that'll now.![]()
