Thread: Mounting hard drives across a network

my wife , have separate desktops, both running ubuntu 10.04. we're both connected via ethernet cable our home network.

our eventual plan buy computer, , @ point existing 1 become network hub htpc setup.

i'm trying figure out right how configure computer see , mount hard drives across our network. since box had more hdd space mine, want able access drive, create folders see fit, , use if physically installed in pc.

ideally, i'd see hdd in places folder mounted device , access through gui.

@ first thought i'd have use samba, sounds that's more accessing windows machines linux clients. installed ssh server side wife's pc, i'm not sure if that's going give me interface want (i don't want forced use command line), , don't think i'm using correctly, since couldn't connect.

i'm in dark here, , learning network operation first time. making hard myself? there easier way this? can give advice or point me links can learn more this?

it's developed windows clients access unix file servers. smbclient ( on linux client ) clients access samba servers. in peer-to-peer network given machine can both.

try samba first. majority of users work out of box. when doesn't work take years off life span determine what's wrong , how fix it. besides nfs'ers , ssh'ers post things "i told so" , "real men don't use samba in linux network"

anyway, if want try here's easiest way:

open nautilus ( home folder )
right click on folder own, ... documents
select "sharing options"
if don't have samba installed ask if want install - do.
select "share folder", "allow others create , delete..", "guest access".
select "create share"
ask if want modify permissions - do.
done

if samba , networking gods smiling upon today other box show documents share in nautilus under networks.
