lr3.2 import problem on windows os

 

this continuation of question posed on august 22, 2010 in discussion string "cannot import cr2".  have not been able resolve issue of importing image existing folder location.  had not been able work on issue number of weeks due other circumstances, until today.   note following people had attempted provide answers , suggestions already:  ssprengel, jays in ct.

 

i use laptop windows operating system , macintosh desktop snow leopard.  run lightroom on both of them.  windows laptop has windows vista home service pack 2, version 6.0 [6002].  around august 12th upgraded lightroom 2 [481478], lightroom 3 on laptop.  left lr2 on laptop lr3.  on september 12th upgraded laptop lr3.2.  no other changes have been laptop or software applications know of.

 

my current attempts @ resolving issue reveal when created new catalog "test catalog" in lr3 , saved catalog desktop new folder labeled "test catalog" can import image lr3.2 new folder on laptop's desktop.  deleted images via lr3.2 folders remove function , tried import images existing folder presented in lr3.2 import dialog, error message "the following files not imported because not read.".   when import images new folder placed on desktop, can use functions in lr3 e.g. develop module.  cannot import images existing folders on laptop's hard drive - have tried importing entire existing folders in following hierarchy:  c:\users\michael\my documents\my pictures\2010  same error message.

 

lr3.2 correctly backups upon exiting each time quit program, know there isn't issue of writing backup folder contained in upper folder contains lightroom catalogs.  have created new word file, saved folder lightroom catalogs, opened up, modified it, saved it, , saw works ok, tells me there no problem read-only folder attribute.

 

i cannot recall if upon upgrade lr2.6 lr3 chose upgrade catalog lr3 version.  matter, if yes, verify, how manual upgrade catalog.

 

 

history of actions between august 10th have taken follows between [[[[ , ]]]]:  

 

[[[[preference settings default catalog set start specific catalog call "lightroom master catalog", not set "load recent catalog". 

 

all of following using laptop:  had no problem lr2 functions.  purchased epson 7000 media storage device, , in august , practiced importing images lr2, , images pulled in ok. next, upgraded lr3.  discovered epson's images had been placed wrong folder when opened lr3.  used remapping function in lr3 move images correct folder.  next, used sandisk card reader import images lr3 existing folder of images, following error message appeared "the following files not imported because not read" (import results said  'some import operations not performed').  tried importing single image, , multiple images, had same error.  tried switching card reader each of 4 different usb port on laptop, same error occurring on each usb port used.

 

in order try isolate problem.  took sandisk card reader memory card , imported images lr3 on macintosh desktop computer; me problem not card reader or memory card.  used sandisk recovery disk while using laptop @ files on memory card , see images correctly while in recovery program, have not copied images laptop's hard disk, , have not tried import laptop's lr3.  did not import images directly camera laptop lr3 since did not think troubleshooting. 

 

i ran repair adobe lr3 cd upgrade disk, on laptop.  tried doing import using sandisk reader , memory card, same problem occurred , same error message, files not imported (i trying import folder of existing images).  used laptop's control panel function remove lr3 application.  did fresh upgrade of lr3 on laptop, same error message , unable import of memory card card reader.  tried image import epson 7000 laptop, , same error message , unable import folder existing images.   tried doing image import lr2 on laptop, , got same problem occur when trying import existing folder of images.  have couple of  canon eos slr digital cameras, , issue occurs of file types of cameras.

 

went lr3 preferences, general tab, checked unchecked box import options - "show import dialog when memory card detected".

 

connected canon xti directly cable laptop computer.  note canon's information said picture transfer protocol automatically used when xti directly connected computer, did not need change in camera's menu communications choices (there no communication menu in fact).  selected 1 image , copied laptop desktop.  tried import lr3 folder of existing images got error message "could not copy file requested location."  while in lr3, changed location of file copied - of existing folders of images; tried 5 different folders, kept getting same error message.

 

with card reader connected via usb port on laptop, copied 1 image file desktop, , tried importing lr3 folder of existing images.  got error message "could not copy file requested location."]]]]

 

 

i not clear if 'import' trying copy or move files location or if adding files catalog.  comments may not, therefore, helpful.

 

firstly, both lr2 , lr3 installed have both catalogs present, if try open lr2 catalog lr3 prompted update catalog.  know catalog working on. 

 

secondly, if reading direct camera, should connect using 'pc connection' mode.

 

thirdly, there issue reading .cr2 files directly canon dslrs (in europe named 300d, 350d, 400d).  while visible canon software, can not seen windows explorer nor can accessed lightroom. 

 

i suggest take cf card out of camera , copy files using windows explorer in destination folder.  sure files on pc.

 

if have right codec installed, can view them windows photo gallery; if don't, can use 1 of canon software packages view files.  sure files not corrupted.

 

then import files lr catalog using normal import routine selecting 'add without moving'.  have tried routine  using 350d using both lr1.x , lr3.x.  if doesn't work - i'm lost.
