How do I generate a variable that gets +1 or -1 depending on clicks?

i'm not sure search for.  there way set unseen variable in flash sort of keeping score? 

 

the best way can describe basic language used use in day, on click can make x=x+1, or x=x-3, or whatever depending on button click on.  , display score (i.e. whatever current value of x) in corner?

 

i guess simplest way me give me link or actual code assign single button add or subtract displayed score in corner.

 

my knowledge of actionscript limited...i know copy-paste purposes online.

what showed pretty hard gets, though can use shorthand of x += 1 (for: x = x + 1)  or x -= 1 (for: x = x - 1).  actual code button depend on version of actionscript using.
