Thread: Using External LCD Text-Only Display With Ubuntu?

i've done bit of search, haven't come much. i've got little gateway netbook i'm using portable audio source, using rhythmbox (although potentially changing nightingale when it's released). use external amplifier , speakers, , i've got remote control change tracks , volume, typically don't sit in front of machine while playing music... of time it's off side while other stuff. now, @ home run music off desktop uses tv monitor... fine, because screen large enough , located in such place can see artist , title in rhythmbox. however, because of small screen size on netbook, can't tell (unless ear) track playing without being right next it, isn't convenient.

so, i'm wondering is: possible use external, text-only, lcd or led display ubuntu, in way allow me display artist , title of playing song in rhythmbox? won't worry rhythmbox aspect of currently, i'm sure there's way pull information, possibly using last.fm or jamando plugins... i'm more concerned connecting external display , having update in real time.

i'm sure there has way in ubuntu, think side-scrolling text displays in stores have programmed computer in first place... haven't found suitable display either, if there's particular 1 that'll work, i'm ears. i'm willing put 1 using raw components (calculator, alarm clock, single character led displays) if can give me rundown on how it. i'd rather not have use 120vac power either... ideally, i'm looking can powered either usb or external 12vdc supply.

sorry long post, wanted make sure i'm getting what's in head across. has info on how this...
