Smart Collections Not-so-smart?

i have started using smart collections gather various pictures have taken of works of art.  have mutliple shots of same art works, , want see shots @ once in order delete , edit others.  there several hundred files in collection.  each time make change file (edit or delete it), entire collection must re-built (perhaps re-indexed, but, panel goes blank must re-displayed).  time consuming , makes working way through collection practially impossible.  there wrong, or nature of smart collections?

i blieve function of collection, never use them or smart collections, seem remember comment.
