Thread: Upgrade to 10.04 and on start desktop does not startup
i updated ubuntu 10.04. on same machine i've used ubuntu 3 or 4 years now. upgrading 8 - 9 - 10. love ubuntu , use everyday work environment.
anyway, when start machine in morning boots commandline instead of desktop. last couple days boot safe-mode , package repair. more once. desktop start annoying.
when trying boot fail safe graphics mode(?) error stating: "fatal server error: no screens." message referred me /var/log/xorg/failsafe.log. here snippet of end of log file:
(ii) vesa(0): not using built-in mode "320x200" (illegal horizontal timings)
(ee) vesa(0): no valid modes
(ii) unloadmodule: "vesa"
(ii) unloadmodule: "int10"
(ii) unloading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libint10.so
(ii) unloadmodule: "vbe"
(ii) unloading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libvbe.so
(ee) screen(s) found, none have usable configuration.
fatal server error:
no screens found
also, i'm using nvidia graphics card on hp machine. installed "current version" accelerated graphics driver says proprietary.
i've had better luck open source nvidia driver nvidia's own. seriously. next time you're reinstalling drivers anyway, try getting "xserver-xorg-video-nouveau" in synaptic, or running @ command line:(if you're in recovery mode, won't need "sudo" part.code:sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
nice if took!
