Thread: Expanding /FileSystem and getting rid of Windows
hi there! 2 things, of course, they're related...
have 2 dual boot machines; desktop , netbook. each have xp , ubuntu. i'm wondering if can tell me how:
1. how can expand /filesystem whatever now
(on ntfs machine)?
2. later, when absolutely positive valuable data
backed (at least twice); can make computer all-ubuntu
machine , keep current ubuntu desktop is.
i'm sure these easy, easy-peasy, out there. give windows old heave-ho, don't want until i'm sure data safely backed up...
thanks, all!
you'll need hard disk or other media move files , said, 1 backup recommended.
empty files out of windows ntfs partitions, , empty of files out of ubuntu.
when you're have files want, go ahead , delete windows.
you'll have ubuntu partition somewhere in middle of hard drive, , you'll want move start of hard drive. it's not easy 'move' start point of linux file system.
can gparted, running in live cd, takes long time.
want use dd command , make backup (snapshot) of operating system now, can resize partition (which empty of files), gparted small can , use dd command copy file.
then, delete partition now. can make new partition @ start of hard disk gparted , use dd command restore operating system backup file.
can keep backup file (snapshot) possible future use.
using dd commands faster using gparted 'move' partition, unless set gparted overnight while sleep, plus have added bonus of operating system 'snapshot' file can keep.
gparted safer not comfortable or confident using dd command.
alternative method use gparted copy , paste resized (as small possible) partition around on hard disk until want it. in old days used complicated because partition number important, use uuid numbers in /etc/fstab , in grub, not need worry if partition number gets changed. copy partition gparted , paste start of hard drive.
need re-install grub, before make sure make grub rescue disk reboot with. how make own grub2 boot cd - use grub-mkrescue.
when done, resize partition occupy entire disc or whatever portion of want.
put files want.
yet way things wait until you're ready install newer version of ubuntu , install in windows partition, overwriting windows. lazy man's way things since work taken care of ubuntu installer. won't need re-install grub or much. move files old (present) ubuntu newer 1 when , ready. ubuntu easy operating system backup , restore, or transfer files , setting 1 ubuntu another, (to 'walk' forward).
method recommended if have older version of ubuntu karmic koala or older, , benefit upgrading current version, ( lucid lynx @ time of post).
there many more ways can it, few ideas can think of have used myself in past. if decide on 1 of possible ways things , more details, post again , ask more info , or else here able advise needed.
