Thread: Can not connect to other devices on locak network

i have installed ubuntu 10.04 on dell laptop. 1 of first things want able access files media on windows server , on nas. found not able connect on network. can't see other devices.

connected thru router. able internet. have on local network w7 desktop, w2003 server, w7 media server , nas. not able see of in network ubuntu.

can see ubuntu laptop on router dhcp assignment list , able ping w7 machines ubuntu. all. after playing around hours did see ubuntu show on network list in w7. not it. gone off list , don't know how got connect 1 time.

use ubuntu media server, learning right using old laptop.

i've had few bugs nas, (though less in ubuntu in win7).

so, cannot see in network. can connect anyway, specifying host want connect manually?

try connecting via places > connect server. select service type "windows share," type location of share under "server", , click "connect." see if can connect, without seeing shares in network. start nas, since shouldn't have worry sharing settings in windows or firewall settings nas.

nas, had use ip address of share connect instead of share name (so, under "server," typed "192.168.1.1/usb_storage"). devices on network have fixed ip addresses? , addresses in /etc/hosts on ubuntu machine?

also, make sure ubuntu machine has fixed ip address, , have added address trusted zone on firewalls of windows computers. use ubuntu server, have machine in hosts file on windows computers, don't happen know file is.
