How can I create a 'wipe' transition effect?

hi, hope can help;

 

i need create wipe effect, illustrate branch, sub-branches etc., 'growing' outwards trunk of tree.

the tree, branch & background positions static on stage.

 

the graphic elements created in photoshop, textured, detailed raster images, not vector shapes.

 

i want 'reveal' branch, left (treetrunk end) right (twigs end).

(ok, visually, not strictly 'growing', if wiped @ reasonable speed, works ok; tried in powerpoint)

 

my first (& ideal) method use alpha channel shape masking branch, in statea reveal nothing of branch, stateb, revealing all, , fc tweening.

...but found alpha shape can't (?) changed, between states, on single object.

 

another way use 'copy' of background, placed above branch graphic, , move left right, revealing branch underneath.

but can't that, background isn't plain, textured, , anyway, there lots of other things going on in background (& foreground) @ same time branch wiping on.

 

anyone got suggestions of how achieve wipe effect, or other way of achieving somwthing similar?

 

i'm starting out flash catalyst, (flash & scripting code way beyond me).

photoshop's thing, , can't believe fc can't simplest of transitions...but ms powerpoint can easily...

 

this have loads of other uses; road-map routes, blood circulation, elecrical wiring etc. etc. -there must way!

 

please help, anyone?
