Thread: Update failure / annoying stop sign on screen

ubuntu computer janitor in ubuntu 10.04

code:
could not install updates installarchives() failed
at top right of screen, when hover mouse on 'red stop sign' says :

code:
an error occurred, please run package manager right-click menu or apt-get in terminal see wrong. error message was: 'error: opening cache (e:could not opent file /var/cache/apt/srcpkgcache.bin - open (13: permission denied), e:the package lists or status file not parsed or opened.) 'this means installed packages have unmet dependencies
is planning on telling me packages have unmet dependencies? don't think , there's no way find out.

think ran
code:
chmod -r 775 /var/*
at point if helps because trying sort out another issue giving me said permissions.

ubuntu doing head in tonight.
