Thread: I need some troubleshooting help

my computer not reach log-in screen on start-up. monitor working; shows motherboard screen on boot , grub loads fine. when load kernel screen stays black , not change. power light blue, meaning still on , connected. when turn computer off searches inputs, usual.

happened this:
turned on compiz benchmark , noticed kind of low, 100 fps when around 300 after loaded. (yah, it's pretty computer.) figured might because had been using suspend turn off , hadn't restarted in time. when did that, above happened.

so: info. pretty hot , humid here. 90's ish think , humid. have ventilation in box, 8 fans in all, when touched of computer on graphics card monitor plugs in, hot. wouldn't want hold finger there long because hurts. didn't feel else heat, figuring video card being safe.
first time i've had non-os related problem computer since got it.

figure out what's up, i've tried several things far. switched port monitor plugged into. hey, never know. didn't work. have no other video cards try, , there no onboard monitor port motherboard.
tried acting if computer booting normal , monitor wasn't on. loaded kernel grub, , waited while, looking @ blank screen. after sure must have reached log-in screen, hit enter , typed in password. every time boot computer, after sign in, fans go on high second go normal. listened , heard nothing.
try hitting super+space , typing 'restart' gnome-do hypothetically restart comp, gnome-do not start-up program because i've had problems on start-up in past.

booting in safe mode works. question this: can using nothing command line , physical observation figure out what's ailing poor computer?

what mean, "booting in safe mode works"?

happens if press ctrl-alt-f1 keys switch terminal mode?

if machine plugged network can ping it, or login it?

if machine unplugged network boot normally?
