Thread: Problem with Disk Utility and GParted
hi guys,
found disk utility modifies partition sizes without our request. when try change partition type, somehow modifies size rounding (mib, or cylinders?).
copied damaged partition 245760000 sectors, new disk. tried modify partition type using disk utility, gave error below, , last sector changed 245762047 245762369, without noticing me.
luckily noticed change , had original sectors noted down somewhere.code:error modifying partition: helper exited exit code 1: in part_change_partition: device_file=/dev/sdb, start=1048576, new_start=1048576, new_size=125829120000, type=0x07 entering ms-dos parser (offset=0, size=1000204886016) msdos_magic found looking @ part 0 (offset 1048576, size 125829120000, type 0x83) new part entry looking @ part 1 (offset 0, size 0, type 0x00) new part entry looking @ part 2 (offset 0, size 0, type 0x00) new part entry looking @ part 3 (offset 0, size 0, type 0x00) new part entry exiting ms-dos parser msdos partition table detected containing partition table scheme = 0 got got disk got partition changed partition start=1048576 size=125829284864 committed disk ugh, offset or size changed offset: 1048576 size: 125829120000 new_offset: 1048576 new_size: 125829284864
should go bug reports disk utility, if please.
found disk utility , gparted not yet functional enough alternative fdisk command. gparted doesn't display partition type anywhere (rather displays fs type if there one) , both use gib units, smaller resolution, making impossible work exact sector sizes.
ok, fdisk bit aged work lba sizes (it shows sizes in blocks, don't match 512 byte sectors) think it's still usable 1 partitioning.
believe in importance of designed gui tools. as possible things should doable in gui, gives better presentation of data, , lets user see things can @ first glance.
