Sequentially Numbered Listing - Not Sequencing?

i created paragraph style have sequentially numbered listing - starting number 1. of listings have 1. aren't incrementing up. ideas? thanks, lucinda

probably should tell you've got in paragraph style's numbering dialog box. mode set "continue previous"?  have list or [default] list:? level it? string in "number:" text entry area?

 

are there un-numbered paragraphs between numbered paragraphs? can "reset" numbered paragraphs 1, depending on how "numbered list" properties set up. (this feature can handy if want every list restart @ 1 after intervening text, in books how lists appear.) can test if problem putting 2 "list" paragraphs next each other no intervening paragraphs. behave?

 

the numbering system non-intuitive in ways, looking tutorial can helpful. (for instance, once knew how single , double digit numbers in list align @ right-hand edges, , last time tried couldn't work no matter settings used. "bullet or number position" alignment setting. i'm going have again...)
