Thread: ubuntu install not seeing unallocated space

i burned 10.04.1 cd, , have been trying install on windows 7 machine, following instructions given here:
http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download
first shrank windows primary partition, freeing 100 gb of 500 gb drive. shows in windows disk management utility unallocated. expected ubuntu want install in 100 gb - instructions imply.
when run install cd, shows 400 gb occupied windows ntfs, , 100 gb free, gives me option of installing linux side-by-side windows in 400 gb. in other words, 100 gb of unallocated disk space ignored. install program has no flexibility - 1 cannot choose use 100 gb of free space.
there missing instructions, or there different windows 7? please help.

i gave idea of using windows shrink windows partition , free space linux. restored windows partition occupy whole disk, installed ubuntu cd, , let use 100 gb side-by-side w7. first reboot w7 invoked chkdsk, next reboot started w7 normally. selecting ubuntu on next reboot gave blank screen '_' blinking in top left corner. didn't good. rebooted , time selected ubuntu recovery option. menu of options presented chose 'update grub' or similar. apparently did something, know not what. next reboot enabled ubuntu start successfully. whew! have dual-boot w7 , ubuntu.
