Thread: Not recognizing executable files

ok, absolute linux newbie. total noooob. installed latest ubuntu yesterday , trying set similar old windows installation. priority 1 installing java & netbeans. downloaded latest netbeans full java cannot seem start installation. comes .sh file. in browsing forum found thread told me needed change permission of file run program, did. clicked "run" , nothing happened. opened again , time selected "run in terminal". terminal opened , promptly closed, accomplishing nothing. new , intimidated whole terminal thing standpoint, doing wrong here?

go menus system, administration, software sources, other software tab, enable partner repository. use ubuntu software center, synaptic package manager, or apt-get install java , netbeans.
