Problem with importing/placing images/pics

hello!  i'm new using these programs , have ran problem.  bought cs5 editions of illustrator , photoshop.  i'm trying place image in illustrator project it's not working correctly.  can add image, when shows in project fills whole screen dark grey color.  i've looked see if can resize image can't.  it's imports big grey screen of nothing.  have imported images before in cs4, don't have now.  1 please me out if can.  i'm college student , project due tomorrow.  have done if didn't run situation.  running windows 7, , computer new.  purchased last october.  appreciated.

you have done on day assigned, not? have resolved issue without last minute panic... anyway, without more info isn't going anywhere. suspect rather of specifics involved photoshop file generic issue. color profile issues smart objects not rendering correctly generic hardware accleration issues w7. impossible tell such meagre info...
