newbie question re: electronic signature

i have few questions regarding electronic signature in form i'm developing.

 

the form require multiple electronic signatures .. 1 original user making request, 2 more approvers, , final person fulfilling request.  i've defined 4 signature fields, in testing, when electronically sign first, forces save of document @ point.  that's not killer, , after reading related threads understand why.  when re-open saved document add approving signature, find entire doc locked accepting further activity.  btw, approvers have complete additional fields along adding signature.

 

on  related note, whenever signature added, need automatically populate "signature date" field.  found thread in forum purported give example, example didn't work in practice, , document protected, couldn't open editing examine code.  when dealing code, i'm not a  java programmer have heavy programming background in several other languages, expect can understand fragments , able pick need easily.
