Thread: Long time Win user, choosing a distro?
ok, desktop runs w7 x64, , netbook ubuntu (the desktop edition atm, try out "netbook remix").
i've used ubuntu before on desktop, gradually stopped.
however, i'll need keep w7 games, other want convert linux.
despite using before i'm still pretty new, have no idea how half stuff works , can head around things being mounted instead of.. well.. there. , gnome de.
have no idea, of them, differences ad benefits between distros. meant htpc's or other specialist applications - other that, not clue.
video encoding, web use, shifting files around network etc. ubuntu, xubuntu, kubuntu - or else?
ps
what's tty? , how - i've read t*tty!![]()
historical artifact has survived. first computers invented long before usable , affordable crt --let alone lcd!!-- screens available. instead of displaying output on screen --which not available yet-- engineers rig electric typing machines serial interface of monstrous gigantic computers, , computer spit out results on that. can still see such scenes in 1960's science-fiction movies, or in original "star trek" tv show, computers print analysis on paper ...
, because typing machines remotely connected, earned addition "tele". (you know word 'tele' different context: telephone = 'distant voice' in ancient greek.)
tadddddaaa: tele typer born = distant/remote typing machine.
in ancient times typing on computer take awful ages. nowadays hit key , whatever typed instantly appears on screen. not in days. whatever typed take minutes show up. hence why shortened. less have type less you're going mistype , less going have wait.
, teletyper became "tty". (tee tee eye).
yes, when os prints message on "tty2" ... technically still thinks it's printing message on remote type printer. internal mechanisms still same, , indeed still possible have serial printer connected rs-232 port , have os print messages on that.
or hook vt100 terminal ... really big unix systems sun/oracle, ibm, hp, fujitsu , others have no graphics cards whatsoever (why should have one?? nobody ever going sit in front of extremely loud system!!) , still have serial port perform local login on such machine: tty.
that's "tty" comes from.
ancient ibm s/360 "tty" terminal next it:
system administrator checking "tty's" output:
