How do I assign properties to elements?

hello,

 

i'm still having problems this:

 

please go to: http://www.peterdanko.com/email_registration.html

 

see spacing between facebook logo , "become peter danko facebook fan"?  want them spaced further apart , want text centered top bottom in box.

 

when assign properties these elements in .css rules, don't apply themselves.

 

i've tried adding padding, margins, vertical align, text align.  nothing seems affect layout. it's rules not connected layout.

 

what doing wrong?
